From Data to a Real Report

Detective, you already know how to read tally charts, pictograms, and bar charts. Now it's time for your biggest mission yet: turning data into a real Word document that other people can read!

Your mission has 3 parts:

  1. Read a data report carefully
  2. Answer questions to prove you read it
  3. Build your own report in Microsoft Word
Read Carefully

The Big Fruit Survey

Every Friday, Ms. Rose's class votes for their favourite fruit at snack time. This week, she asked all 25 children in her class to choose just one fruit each.

She wrote down every vote on the board, one at a time. When she finished counting, she found the totals below:

FruitNumber of Votes
🍎 Apple8
🍌 Banana5
🍊 Orange3
🍇 Grape9

Ms. Rose said, "Now that we have this data, let's find a way to present it clearly — so anyone who looks at it can understand our class's favourite fruit right away."

Read this passage carefully — you will need to remember these numbers for the next step and for your report!

Prove You Read It

Reading Check

Your Task

Build Your Report in MS Word

Great reading! Now open Microsoft Word and follow these steps to present the fruit survey data.

📄 Open: My_Data_Report_Template.docx
  1. Open the Word file your teacher gave you, called "My_Data_Report_Template.docx".
  2. Type a title at the top, like "Our Favourite Fruit Survey".
  3. Fill in the table. Click inside each empty box and type the fruit names and vote numbers exactly as you read them in the passage. Press Tab to move to the next box.
  4. Finish the sentences at the bottom: which fruit got the MOST votes, and which got the FEWEST.
  5. Save your file (Ctrl+S or Cmd+S) and keep the same file name.
  6. Show your teacher your finished Word document!
