Step 1 ยท Learn

What is a computer network?

Read the idea below, then look at the picture of devices talking to each other.

A computer network is simply a group of devices โ€” like computers, phones, and printers โ€” that are connected together so they can talk to each other and share information.

It's a bit like a group of friends passing notes to each other in class โ€” except the "notes" are photos, messages, and videos, and they travel at lightning speed!

Wide Area Network

A network that covers a huge area โ€” even the whole world! The Internet is the biggest WAN ever made, connecting billions of devices.

WiFi

TAP TO FLIP
Wireless Network

A network with no cables! It uses invisible radio waves flying through the air to connect your devices to the router.
Step 3 ยท Discover

How does data travel?

Press "Next" to follow one photo's journey across a network, step by step.

๐Ÿ“ท

1. You send a photo

Fun facts to remember

โšก

Data can travel through cables almost as fast as the speed of light!

๐Ÿ“ฆ

Big files are broken into tiny pieces called packets before they travel, then joined back together.

๐ŸŒ

The Internet connects more than 5 billion people around the world.

๐Ÿ”ก

"WiFi" doesn't actually stand for anything official โ€” it's just a catchy brand name!

๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ

Some networks send data through satellites in space to reach faraway places.
